The landscape of ethics work has undergone a transformative evolution over the past several decades, extending beyond traditional academic philosophy to encompass diverse domains and professions. This edited volume aims to provide a comprehensive exploration of the roles, responsibilities, and challenges faced by contemporary ethicists across various contexts. We invite contributions that critically examine the nature of ethics work within specific fields and illuminate the intersections of ethics practice across domains. Apart from involving specific duties, each domain of ethics work also poses unique ethical challenges for practitioners. In many cases, these challenges may result directly from the context in which a person does ethics work. This edited collection will provide a survey of what it means to be an ethicist and to “do ethics work” today, with contributions from a number of professionals who consider themselves “ethicists” in a variety of contexts. 

Contributors will be invited to critically examine what it means to be an ethicist in their specific field/context, including the ethical challenges they face. In so doing, we expect they could: 

• Provide important perspectives on what it means to be an ethicist and/or do ethics work in their specific field/context 
• Reflect on the ways in which their context impacts their work 
• Elucidate how their work is “ethics work” 
• Engage with multiple contexts to discuss how their role impacts the content of their work and/or their approach
• Explain and defend why ethics work and being an ethicist is of value to persons, institutions, and the public more broadly
• Critically examine what the defensible scope of ethics work is or should be
  

Authors interested in contributing to this volume should submit an abstract of 300-500 words outlining their proposed chapter, along with a brief biography. Abstracts should be submitted to apreti@rosemont.edu or weidel@gonzaga.edu by April 1, 2024. Early submissions are encouraged. Selected contributors will be notified by April 15 and will be invited to submit full chapters (approximately 7,000-8,000 words) by June 15. We encourage submissions that advance our understanding of contemporary ethics work and the multifaceted role of ethicists. This edited volume will serve as an invaluable resource for scholars, practitioners, and educators, shedding light on the evolving landscape of ethics in an increasingly complex world.
